Unit 10 progression planning

Choices for UCAS and UCAS Conservatoire

  • Trinity Laban conservatoire of Music and Dance
  • University of Colchester
  • The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama
  • Anglia Ruskin's university
  • All of these Universities offer a Musical theatre course which I am interested in.
My first choice is Trinity Laban. Looking into the website and course I have booked to attend an open day which takes place on the 7th December 2018.
I attended the open day and found it highly useful as if gave me a bigger insight of how it is to study there, I took part in a two workshops one singing and the other drama. Attending these workshops gave me a taster of how the Conservatoire runs and how they conduct some of their lessons. I also met some of the students and teachers and got to ask the students opinion of the course and their experiences studying there. Last but not least I went on a campus tour which allowed me to visit the music and musical theatre campuses.

As for the audition requirements we will have to take part in the following:
  • Group workshop (including warm up exercises , learning musical theatre sequence including group song dance and script work.
The websites also says that if at anytime the panel identifies that there's a significant mismatch between the evidenced ability and demands of the course you may not be able to continue to the next part of the audition.
As for Solo auditions;
  • Two contrasting songs up to 10 minutes in total
  • One short monologue
  • Dance Solo lasting no longer than 2 minutes
The audition pieces I have chosen are below
Song 1 : Look what happened to Mabel from Mack and Mabel
Song 2 :Fly Fly Away from Catch me if you can
Monologue : They done her in from My fair Lady
Dance Track: Love on Top by Bey-once

My Second choice Royal Central School of Speech and Drama looking at the course I can see that the training is very intense and I am looking forward to doing more training and facing the challenges.
As for auditions they have asked for the following:
  • 2 classical monologues from their speech list
  • 1 contemporary monologue from 1960 onward's
  • 2 songs of your choice one from a musical and one other (doesn't have to be from a musical )
The auditions pieces I have chosen are :
Song 1: Look what happened to Mabel from Mack and Mabel
Song 2: Heaven by Bryan Adams
Classical Monologue 1: “Lo she is one of this Confederacy” from Midsummer's Night Dream
Classical Monologue 2: “I Left no ring with her” from twelfth Night
Contemporary Monologue:”They done her in” from my fair lady
I have decided to change my second classical monologue as I didn't feel I could relate to my character that much. I have decided to change my second classical monologue as I didn't feel I could relate to my character that much, instead I changed it to Ungently Brutus from Julius Ceaser

My third choice is Anglia Ruskin's.
I have chosen to apply here because after watching the videos and looking at the course they prepare you well for life after uni teaching you about the different career paths you can go into and I find that very beneficial and important. For the audition I have to prepare either a song and a dance, song and monologue ,or dance and monologue.
I have decided to do; Fly Fly away from catch me if you can
and They done her in from My fair lady

Friday 28th September – Project support
Today we delivered our audition pieces . We started off with a basic ballet audition which was lead by Mandy which was followed by our individual auditions. As a musical theatre student I was asked to prepare two contrasting monologues and two contrasting songs. The songs that I prepared were from two musicals one named “fly fly away “ from Catch me if you can, and “look what happened  to Mabel” from Mack and Mabel . The reasons why I chose these particular songs was because I felt like they fit my vocal range and is a good audition piece that will show my vocal  skills . The monologues that I had presented were “The raven himself is hoarse” from Macbeth and a monologue from  “ protective shield . I felt as these two monologues were a good contrast as the both had Different stories behind them.
Mock auditions
Over the months of October ,November and December  we have had a few mock auditions
The mock auditions helped a lot because it helped me see what was right for me and what I may of needed to change. One thing I have changed is my dance solo and the song.
I began choreographing my solo to the song Praying by Kesha but later changed it to love on top by Beyonce. The reason why I changed the song and some of the movement was because I don't think that the first choice was playing to my strength and as for my strengths in dance I am good at expressing character through movement. Another reason was the style , I felt as if the style required more technical movement which I wasn't able to do as well. Down below are the different stages I went through in order to come up with my final solo piece.
